'GEOS IERCC Coordinates Rescue of Off-Grid Individual In Scotland

by GEOS IERCC Duty Officer on February 5, 2019

GEOS is an international company that handles emergency calls from satellite beacons. They operate like a 911 call center.

The Emergency Operations Team at the GEOS International Emergency Response Coordination Center (IERCC) received a SOS activation in Scotland from a 70 year old man who has been living off the grid for 25 years.

Every Sunday, Ken would activate the Ok feature of his SPOT Satellite Messenger, but on this day, he instead activated the SOS emergency button. The IERCC is the global monitoring center for all Satellite Emergency Notification Devices, and received the signal and immediately jumped into action by calling the MCC in the UK, which in turn launched a Coast Guard Helicopter to the reported coordinates.

Once on scene the Coast Guard helicopter crew determined Ken need assistance, but were unable to winch him up due to the tree cover, so they called the mountain rescue team.
